A year after Vadim Kruglov, 37, was found stabbed to death inside a tent at the Burning Man festival, his killer remains at large, and investigators are still working to piece together the events leading up to his death. The Pershing County Sheriff's Office has not made any arrests in connection with the slaying.

Kruglov, a Russian-born man living in Washington state, was discovered in a pool of blood on the evening of August 30, 2025, as the festival's iconic effigy, "The Man," burned. An autopsy revealed no defensive wounds, suggesting the attack was sudden and incapacitating. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered at the scene and contained multiple DNA profiles, according to investigators. Kruglov's cellphone was also recovered but remained locked at the time of an interview with a detective.

Unanswered Questions

One of the primary challenges for investigators is accounting for Kruglov's movements during a roughly four-hour window before his body was discovered. He had reportedly received medical care at Rampart, a temporary hospital on the festival grounds, on August 30 and was released around 5 p.m. His activities and whereabouts between his release and 9:14 p.m., when he was found with the fatal wound, have not been publicly detailed.

Earlier on the day of his death, Kruglov was reportedly seen DJing with two unidentified men at a camp on the festival's outskirts. Authorities have not identified these individuals despite receiving numerous tips. Friends and campmates have described Kruglov as increasingly paranoid in the days preceding his death, which they attributed to his use of cocaine and possibly methamphetamine. Some reported he believed he was being watched.

The Investigation

The death marked the first known homicide in the festival's history. An anonymous witness later told The Hollywood Reporter that she and her partner were alerted by a woman in a red dress who found Kruglov bleeding out in his tent and stated she had not checked his pulse. The group then used Starlink to contact a Black Rock Ranger, who relayed the information to law enforcement.

Kruglov was officially identified through fingerprints days after the killing by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office. His father, Igor Kruglov, released a video from Russia appealing for justice and expressing pride in his son's character. The Pershing County Sheriff's Office has continued to solicit information from the public regarding this crime.
