Andy Burnham has vowed to be "accountable, visible and accessible" to Labour MPs as he prepares to become prime minister. Speaking in his first address to the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) via video conference on Monday, Burnham outlined his priorities for governance, emphasizing "culture change, political direction and narrative."

Burnham, who passed the necessary number of nominations from MPs to secure the Labour leadership, stated that his impending ascent to prime minister is a "significant moment for the country." He called for unity, asserting that "our constituents are counting on all of us to come together." Burnham is expected to be formally declared Labour leader at a conference on July 17 and take office as prime minister on July 20.

He also indicated that government appointments would be based on "contribution, experience and commitment," acknowledging the Labour movement as a "broad church." Burnham expressed a desire to foster a culture "where everyone is valued, seen and listened to," and highlighted the importance of a "feedback loop" between MPs, communities, and the Cabinet for effective policy-making.

During the question-and-answer session, MPs raised topics including regaining support in Wales, the approach to Ukraine, ensuring rural and coastal areas are not overlooked, and fostering a positive culture within the party. One MP, Patrick Hurley, remarked that Burnham understands the necessity of economic growth for improving public services and living standards, and will "inject the urgency into government that will be needed."

However, one Labour MP, speaking anonymously to the Daily Mail, suggested Burnham had received an "easy ride" during the online hustings, with some questions appearing "planted" by his supporters. Notably, there were no questions concerning the representation of women in leadership roles, despite comments from Labour figure Harriet Harman on the issue.

Burnham also paid tribute to Ann Widdecombe and praised outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his commitment to the Hillsborough families.
