Burnham Pays to Keep Macron Gift for Wife, Receives Discount
The British Prime Minister's office disclosed that a bracelet gifted to his wife by France's First Lady was retained after payment, with a £140 threshold applied.
Andy Burnham's office has confirmed that a bracelet gifted to his wife by Brigitte Macron was paid for to be kept by the couple. The jewelry was presented during a visit that marked the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in London.
Details released by the Cabinet Office indicate that the value of the bracelet exceeded the £140 registration threshold. Ministers have the option to keep gifts from foreign dignitaries or leave them with their departments. If a minister chooses to keep a gift, they must pay its value into government funds, but only for the amount exceeding £140.
According to the transparency log, Burnham also received a bottle of wine and a pen from French President Emmanuel Macron, which were listed as 'held by department.' In return, Burnham presented the French president and his wife with a wool blanket.
Other gifts noted include maple syrup and a wooden bowl given to Burnham by Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, which were also retained by the Prime Minister's office. The only gift received by the Prime Minister with a stated monetary value in the latest register was a book about the Bayeux Tapestry from the British Museum, valued at £150. This item remained with Downing Street and was not claimed by Burnham personally.
Such gifts from foreign leaders can present ethical considerations for ministers. In a past instance, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid to keep a personalized pair of cufflinks received from then-U.S. President Donald Trump during a state visit, later giving them to his son.
Recalling a diplomatic exchange from 2009, Gordon Brown offered then-U.S. President Barack Obama an oak pen stand crafted from the timbers of HMS Gannet, a ship involved in the Royal Navy's campaign against the slave trade. The wood for the pen stand originated from the same source as the desk in the Oval Office. In return, Brown received a DVD set of 25 classic American films, though he was unable to view them due to incompatibility with UK DVD players.
