Prime Minister Andy Burnham is preparing for his initial meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly in New York. President Trump is also expected to deliver a speech at the assembly, reportedly intending to criticize allies who have not supported the U.S. in the conflict with Iran and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Despite potential diplomatic challenges, Justice Minister Alex Davies-Jones expressed optimism that the two leaders would "get on famously."

Downing Street is reportedly aiming for a brief meeting to minimize the risk of unforeseen issues. The location of the talks, outside the Oval Office, may help Burnham avoid a potentially unpredictable press conference with President Trump, who has more high-profile engagements scheduled with leaders from China and Ukraine.

The relationship between the U.S. and the UK has seen complexities. A prior meeting between Trump and Keir Starmer, Burnham's predecessor, was initially viewed positively but later strained due to Starmer's refusal to participate in offensive strikes on Iran. More recently, President Trump has made comments described as supportive of a merger between Northern Ireland and the Republic, a notion rejected by the UK government. He has also hinted at wavering U.S. support for Britain regarding the Falkland Islands, linking it to the UK's stance on the Iran conflict and its impact on global energy supplies.

Disagreements have also surfaced regarding technology policy, with U.S. officials reportedly expressing concerns about the UK's online safety legislation and proposed restrictions on social media use for minors. Furthermore, the U.S. and UK have adopted differing approaches to AI development, with Trump questioning the need for regulatory safeguards.

Burnham, previously a mayor, had suggested he might not meet with Trump, citing the president's past remarks. However, he has since indicated a pragmatic approach, stating his intention to meet leaders where they are and find common ground.
