Burnham Declares 'Special Relationship' Strong Amidst Upcoming Trump Talks

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated his trust in U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the "Special Relationship" between the UK and the U.S. as "as strong as it's ever been" ahead of their first face-to-face meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York. This marks a significant shift from Burnham's past characterizations of Trump's politics as "poisonous."

Speaking to reporters en route to New York, Burnham affirmed his trust in allies, including President Trump, stating, "Yes, of course, you know, we trust, we trust our allies. Of course, we do." He acknowledged past critical remarks from both sides, including Trump's previous dismissal of him as "the mayor of some town," but emphasized the importance of focusing on the present.

"Politicians say things throughout their careers, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in," Burnham said, recalling a conversation where he told Trump, "Mr President, Manchester isn't 'some town,' I said, this is Manchester." He suggested moving beyond past comments, describing the situation as something to "have a laugh about."

During the meeting, Burnham plans to urge President Trump to stand firm with NATO against growing Russian provocation and to address the threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI). This comes despite Trump's previous dismissal of AI risks as a "hoax."

Burnham intends to warn Trump that safety concerns regarding AI cannot be ignored and will ask that U.S.-based tech firms submit their latest AI models for testing by the UK's AI Safety Institute. He will also advocate for international cooperation to ensure AI is "harnessed for good to make our countries safer and stronger."

The Prime Minister also plans to discuss sensitive topics, including Trump's opposition to the UK's deal to hand sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and ambiguities regarding U.S. support for the UK's sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Burnham stated he has reassured his Mauritian counterpart that the UK remains determined to secure the long-term operation of the base there, crucial for security.

Additionally, Burnham will press Trump to increase support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict and will raise concerns about the rising energy prices stemming from the war in the Middle East.

Britain and the U.S. are set to unveil a new "AI and Autonomy partnership" aimed at using AI to detect and counter threats to critical national infrastructure, with the Ministry of Defence and the Pentagon collaborating to enhance deterrence and technological advantage.
