Burnham Criticizes Trump's Russia Deal Amidst Ukraine Support Push
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham vows to mend ties between the US and Ukraine following recent actions by former President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Wednesday labeled former President Donald Trump's recent agreement with Vladimir Putin a "dark moment" for Ukraine, pledging to "repair bridges" and restore US support for Kyiv. Burnham is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Downing Street later today.
Burnham's remarks came during a session in the House of Commons, where he addressed concerns raised by Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey. Davey had accused Trump of a "shameful betrayal" of Ukraine, alleging that the former president eased sanctions on Russian diesel ahead of crucial mid-term elections in America, which have been affected by rising fuel prices.
"Scared of the mid-terms, President Trump has done a deal with Vladimir Putin to buy Russian diesel, ripping up international sanctions against Putin," Davey stated.
Burnham acknowledged the difficult position of President Zelensky, describing him as "carrying the heaviest of weights right now." He indicated his intention to act as a mediator, stating, "What I have to do in my role is try and repair bridges so that the support comes back. So I should, at this moment in time, be careful in terms of laying the ground to bring people back together."
He further assured that President Zelensky would not leave Britain "empty-handed" after their meeting. The Prime Minister's visit and statements underscore Britain's continued commitment to Ukraine amidst evolving international relations.
This development follows recent statements from Trump suggesting Ukraine needs new leadership and that Putin desires a peace deal more than Kyiv. Ukraine has also accused the US of aiding Russia's war effort after certain Starlink internet services, owned by SpaceX, were reportedly limited, impacting Kyiv's ability to detect Russian attacks.
