Burnham Attends Everton Match with Canadian PM Carney Following Father's Death

Everton Football Club paid tribute to Prime Minister Andy Burnham's father, Roy, as a "lifelong, diehard Blue" during the club's match against Wolves. Mr. Burnham, who is grieving the recent loss of his father to Alzheimer's, attended the Carabao Cup game with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, a fellow Evertonian.

Roy Burnham's photograph was displayed on the Hill Dickinson Stadium's screens with a message honoring his dedication to the club. Both Mr. Burnham and Mr. Carney wore Alzheimer's Society forget-me-not flowers on their lapels. Mr. Carney shared that he also lost his father to the same illness, telling Mr. Burnham, "I know that struggle."

Before the match, the two leaders held a bilateral meeting at the stadium. During their discussion, they explored opportunities for collaboration on defense and artificial intelligence. Mr. Burnham described Mr. Carney as a "great progressive leader" and expressed enthusiasm about having a counterpart to discuss Everton's performance with at future G7 meetings. He welcomed Mr. Carney to Liverpool and the club's new stadium.

Mr. Carney noted the potential for Canada and the UK to "build together" in areas including AI development. He called his presence an "honour."

After their 45-minute meeting, both leaders donned Everton scarves and took their seats. They were seen greeting fans and celebrating when Everton scored the match's only goal in the 80th minute.

Mr. Burnham had invited Mr. Carney to the game in July, shortly after becoming Prime Minister. Mr. Carney adopted Everton as his favored team after moving to the UK. Since taking office in July, Mr. Burnham, a lifelong Everton supporter, has been a regular at the stadium, which opened last year.

A Downing Street spokesperson stated that the leaders emphasized the strong cooperation between the UK and Canada and the importance of forging similar ties with European partners, particularly in trade and defense. The Prime Minister welcomed Canada's participation as the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a joint initiative by the UK, Japan, and Italy to develop next-generation stealth fighter jets. They also discussed strengthening defense cooperation and the roles of the Multilateral Defence Mechanism and the Defence Security Resilience Bank.
