Andy Burnham has appointed former Blairite minister James Purnell as his Chief of Staff, a move that has drawn scrutiny due to Purnell's past political associations and career.

Purnell, a former Work and Pensions Secretary who served in the Cabinet under Gordon Brown, will lead Burnham's operations if he becomes Prime Minister. The appointment was confirmed following media reports that had leaked before Purnell had informed his staff at lobbying firm Flint Global, where he served as CEO. The chief of staff role is a senior advisory position overseeing political staff, policy, and communications.

Purnell and Burnham have known each other for over 25 years, having both been elected to Parliament in 2001. Their careers advanced together, leading to Cabinet positions in the Brown government. After a period in government, Purnell transitioned to the BBC as director of strategy before leading Flint Global.

Concerns have been raised regarding Purnell's past connections, particularly his relationship with Peter Mandelson. Mandelson, a prominent figure from the New Labour era, described Purnell as 'one of my boys' and a 'great friend of mine and a man of huge intellect and talent' in 2010. Flint Global also absorbed staff from Mandelson's former lobbying firm. A source close to Mandelson indicated his pleasure at the appointment. Burnham's official spokesman stated that due diligence was conducted and denied any recent friendship between Purnell and Mandelson.

Opposition figures have voiced criticism, with one Labour MP stating, 'We cannot have that issue AGAIN.' A government source questioned whether a "quick Google" had been performed. Pro-Starmer sources highlighted aspects of Purnell's public record, including his stance on the Iraq War and past dealings related to the MPs' expenses scandal.

In 2004, Purnell faced questions about his tax affairs regarding the sale of a London flat. His spokesperson at the time maintained he had done nothing wrong and had sought advice from HMRC, which confirmed no capital gains tax was due.

Questions have also been raised about potential conflicts of interest arising from Purnell's previous work with clients at Flint Global. Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized the appointment, suggesting it indicated Burnham was "not thinking things through enough" and described the move as "out with the old and in with the old."

Burnham's spokesman confirmed that Purnell has resigned from Flint Global and will have no ongoing financial interest in the company. Flint Global also issued a statement confirming Purnell's resignation and his recusal from all client activities. Purnell himself described the incoming Prime Minister as a "Blunketite," referencing former Home Secretary David Blunkett's mainstream New Labour approach, with a statist inclination.

Details regarding other key appointments, such as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, remain undisclosed, leaving some Labour MPs uncertain about the ideological direction of Burnham's prospective government.
