Builders undertaking refurbishment work on a farm in Layer Marney, Essex, discovered a cannabis cultivation operation estimated to be worth £1 million.

On August 28, 2026, contractors from Keystones Property Group visited former chicken barns on the site, where they were to carry out conversion work into storage units. During their inspection, they noticed that some buildings were secured with covered windows and heard ventilation equipment running inside. They were subsequently warned that "guardians" were present and advised to leave for their safety.

Drone footage captured by the contractors shows individuals fleeing across the countryside as the drone pursues one suspect. Inside one of the barns, rows of cannabis plants were visible, indicating a significant cultivation operation. Essex Police confirmed that a second large barn also appeared to be prepared for similar use.

A spokesman for Keystones Property Group stated that their team acted quickly upon realizing the situation, contacting the police and cooperating with the authorities. The company emphasized their concern for the potential danger their employees and contractors unknowingly faced, as they had been legitimately instructed to perform refurbishment and surveying work.

Essex Police responded to reports of the cultivation on Clears Road around 1 p.m. on August 28, 2026. A 24-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation and has been released under investigation. Police are continuing their inquiries and securing the scene.

Keystones Property Group had initially visited the farm on July 24, 2026, and were approached about letting and refurbishing two bungalows, as well as the potential commercial use of the chicken barns. After receiving keys, they began refurbishing one of the bungalows. The company thanked the police for their response and professionalism and pledged to continue providing any information that may assist the investigation.
