Budget Challenges Loom as Branch Falls Near Daily Mail Journalists

A falling tree branch narrowly missed Daily Mail political correspondent Christian Calgie and cameraman Aiden Smith as they were filming in Green Park, London. The incident occurred while the journalists were preparing to report on the challenges facing Chancellor John Healey ahead of his first Budget, scheduled for announcement next Wednesday.

Budget Pressures and Potential Tax Hikes

The upcoming Budget is expected to address pressing voter concerns, particularly the cost of energy. Although a previous cut to VAT on household electricity bills was implemented, rising gas and oil prices have largely offset its impact. Chancellor Healey faces the difficult task of balancing the government's spending pledges with fiscal responsibility.

While Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated adherence to manifesto commitments not to increase income tax, National Insurance, or VAT, other areas may be subject to new levies. Official modeling suggests that increasing Capital Gains Tax, a move favored by some on the left of the Labour party, could prove counterproductive and result in lost revenue for the Treasury.

However, the government is reportedly considering a significant raid on the banking sector, potentially raising £2 billion. Income tax thresholds may also remain frozen for another year, a measure that has not been updated since 2021 and could push more taxpayers into higher tax bands.

Furthermore, the threshold for a new property tax, previously set by Rachel Reeves, might be lowered from £2 million to £1.5 million. This adjustment could bring an additional 200,000 family homes into the scope of the levy. The Machine Games Duty, a tax on gambling machines, is also reportedly set to double to 40%, despite warnings that this could also negatively impact Treasury revenue.

A Close Call Amidst Reporting

The incident in Green Park saw a large branch detach and fall while Mr. Calgie and Mr. Smith were filming. The cameraman, Mr. Smith, captured the event on film despite being struck by the falling foliage, sustaining a bleeding cut to his forehead. He continued filming for another hour before returning to the office. The close call occurred just days before the full details of the government's fiscal plans are revealed to the public.
