Buccaneers Secure First Win, Undrafted Rookie Jalon Daniels Shines
Quarterback Jalon Daniels led the Buccaneers to a 24-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, showcasing a performance that defied his undrafted status.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have ended their winless streak, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 24-16 on the road. The victory, achieved with short rest, was anchored by a strong performance from rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels and a dominant rushing game.
Daniels, making his second start in place of the injured Baker Mayfield, completed 76% of his passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, without any turnovers. His poise and decision-making impressed coach Todd Bowles. "He played within himself. He played smart. He was decisive with his throws. He knew when to run," Bowles commented, highlighting Daniels' improved play since his first start. Despite being passed over in the draft, Daniels aims to use his background as motivation, stating, "I look at myself as if I’m a (undrafted free agent) rookie going out there and just trying to be able to make plays."
Bowles indicated that Daniels is expected to continue as the starter when the Buccaneers host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 18, though Mayfield is making progress from a fractured thumb.
The Buccaneers' run game was also a significant factor in the win, accumulating 241 rushing yards at an average of 6.2 yards per carry. Running back Bucky Irving was a standout, rushing for 165 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown run. "He did a heck of a job avoiding tackles," Bowles said. "The offensive line did a heck of a job blocking for him. Bucky brought a different energy."
Despite committing 14 penalties, the Buccaneers managed to win the turnover battle, recovering two fumbles and intercepting two passes. Cornerback Zyon McCollum also contributed defensively, allowing zero receptions when targeted against CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Bowles attributed McCollum's success to his increased film study and mental preparation.
The Buccaneers, now 1-4, are back in contention in a division where no team currently holds a winning record. They face a short week before preparing for their next game against the Steelers.
