Buccaneers Dominate Panthers with Unconventional Scores in Baker Mayfield's Return

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers achieved a commanding 33-6 lead at halftime against the Carolina Panthers, fueled by two highly unusual scoring plays. Quarterback Baker Mayfield returned to action after a three-game absence due to a thumb injury.

One of the unexpected scores came from defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who recovered a strip-sack fumble from Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Kancey capped the play with a flip into the end zone, an uncommon feat for a defensive lineman.

Adding to the unconventional scoring, cornerback Zyon McCollum returned a blocked extra point for a two-point conversion. This play occurred after the Panthers had narrowed the deficit with a touchdown pass from Young to tight end Darren Waller.

McCollum also recorded an interception in the first half. Mayfield, who had been sidelined with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand, connected with Tez Johnson for a touchdown pass that contributed to the Buccaneers' substantial halftime advantage. The 33 first-half points marked the third-highest single-half total in franchise history and the most since 2021.

The Buccaneers entered the game with a 1-5 record, last in the NFC South. The Panthers, who had been leading the NFC South with a 3-2 record, struggled to contain Tampa Bay's offense, particularly in the first half.
