Buccaneers Coach Todd Bowles Seen in Agony After Team's First Win
The head coach was briefly overcome with pain on the sideline, later explained by a player's celebratory helmet strike.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles was visibly distressed on the sideline as his team secured their first victory of the season against the Dallas Cowboys. The incident occurred moments after Alex Anzalone's game-sealing interception.
Cameras captured Bowles dropping to one knee, grimacing in pain, as the clock wound down on the Buccaneers' 24-16 win. The moment caused concern among fans, particularly given the team's 0-4 start to the season and the pressure on the 62-year-old coach.
ESPN's Jenna Laine later clarified on X that Bowles had been accidentally struck in the stomach by a player's helmet during the team's celebration of Anzalone's play. Bowles confirmed after the game that he was unharmed.
The Buccaneers' victory saw rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels lead the offense. Daniels completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards, directing a turnover-free game. He is filling in for starting quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is expected to miss at least one more game due to a dislocated thumb.
Running back Bucky Irving was a key contributor, rushing for 165 yards and scoring two touchdowns, including a crucial 72-yard run that set up the go-ahead score. The team amassed 241 rushing yards in total.
Daniels reflected on the win, stating, "We lost the first quarter of the season. We didn't lose the second, third or fourth. We've still got to play those. So we started the second quarter tonight. It's a long way to climb out, but at the same time, we're upbeat and if we played as hard and played as effective, we'll be OK."
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott led a 99-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to George Pickens in the fourth quarter. However, his second interception of the game, off a tipped pass in the final two minutes, ultimately sealed the Buccaneers' win.
The Cowboys, now with a 2-3 record, have experienced an inconsistent start to their season, marked by offensive struggles at times.
