Employees of the Texas-based convenience store chain Buc-ee's have come forward with accounts of how the company handles unsold food and merchandise, drawing attention to food waste. The discussion gained traction on Reddit after a customer reported witnessing approximately 50 sandwiches being discarded at a Buc-ee's location late one evening.
Customers and employees alike have expressed dismay over the reported waste. One employee shared on Reddit, "Worst part of working third shift at Bucees is throwing away all the food that you work so hard to make. Throw away 50 [sandwiches] to make 150 more that night just to throw away 95 of those in 2 days."
Beyond food, employees also claim that old merchandise is disposed of in a manner that prevents scavenging. "Same with the merchandise. Once the season is over it all gets destroyed. They shred the clothes so no one will dumpster dive even though it goes in a compactor," one employee stated.
These revelations have led to a public conversation about the practices, with some users suggesting that Buc-ee's should donate surplus food to local food banks. However, discussions also touched upon the complexities of food donation for large chains.
Food Safety and Liability Concerns
Experts and commenters pointed out that food safety regulations and liability concerns often restrict businesses from donating perishable items. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hot foods must be held at or above 135 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent bacterial growth. Improper packaging can also pose a risk. Therefore, convenience stores like Buc-ee's may be unable to donate items that do not meet these strict safety standards.
Some users on Reddit defended such practices, noting that local ordinances can also play a role. "Often, there are local ordinances in effect that mean restaurants can’t donate food," one commenter wrote. "Every restaurant and store does that. They face civil liability if someone eats out-of-date food and gets sick," another added, suggesting that corporate policies are often dictated by government regulations and the need to avoid legal repercussions.
Buc-ee's has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these employee accounts and customer observations. The company, known for its extensive travel centers, restrooms, and large gift shops, has a significant following among road travelers. The chain offers a wide array of grab-and-go meals, barbecue, and a full-scale food market.
