Bryson Fire Rapidly Spreads Near Malibu, Prompts Evacuations
The wildfire, which ignited Thursday evening, has consumed 200 acres with minimal containment as high winds and dry conditions persist.
The Bryson Fire continued its rapid spread through the hills north of Malibu early Friday, consuming 200 acres and achieving only 5% containment as of Friday morning. Officials are urging residents in affected areas to evacuate.
The blaze ignited shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday near Encinal Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway, in proximity to Los Angeles County’s Camp Kilpatrick. The fire quickly grew, expanding from approximately a half-acre to five acres within 15 minutes, and reaching 20 acres within 30 minutes. Within an hour of ignition, the fire had scorched at least 40 acres, fueled by wind-driven spot fires that advanced ahead of the main fire front.
Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for several zones. The fire is burning just north of Encinal Canyon Road, threatening Camp Fred Miller, a Los Angeles County juvenile detention facility to its east, and the Malibu Country Club to its west. Malibu officials reported Friday morning that they were not aware of any homes that had been damaged or destroyed by the fire.
Firefighters are contending with challenging conditions, including strong overnight winds. Malibu remains under a Red Flag Warning until Saturday at 8:00 p.m., with a Wind Advisory in effect until Friday at 8 p.m. A Heat Advisory is also in place until Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
Los Angeles County officials were scheduled to hold a press conference at 8:30 a.m. to provide updates on the fire.
Evacuation Orders have been issued for areas including KAN-U017 and SYC-U016-A. Evacuation Warnings are in place for CRN-U019, LBO-U018, LEO-U015, MAL-C113, MAL-C114, MCR-U021-A, MLK-U020, SYC-U016-B, SYC-U016-C, SYC-U016-D, VST-U046, and WLV-C201.
Residents who have been evacuated are advised to go to Agoura High School in Agoura Hills. Shelters for small and large animals are available at the Agoura Animal Care Center and Pierce College Equestrian Center, respectively.
While the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) remains open in both directions, several roads are closed, including Decker Road and Encinal Canyon Road, Kanan Road and Mulholland Highway, and Mulholland Highway and Westlake Boulevard.
The proximity of the fire has understandably caused anxiety among Malibu residents, many of whom are still recovering from the January 2025 Palisades Fire, which impacted 720 homes. One evacuee, Susan Booker, told NBC LA, "There’s not really much you can do except, you know, wait and hope that, you know, all these wonderful firemen will, you know, get control of it. But it’s really windy, and it’s really scary to see this happening again so close to the house."
Discussions have also arisen regarding the state's responsibility for the land where the fire is located. The Governor's press office stated on X (formerly Twitter), "'Responsibility Area' designations indicate which government agency pays for and manages emergency wildfire response. Response in this area is paid for by the State but managed by the County. It does not have anything to do with who is responsible for property maintenance and clearing defensible space before a fire." The office also confirmed that state resources are actively engaged in combating the fire.
It remains unclear what sparked the Bryson Fire.
