Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba were singled out for their standout performances in Week 2 of the NFL season by former NFL players Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski on FOX Sports' "Gronk & Jules." Both players were named "Employees of the Week" by the former stars.
Young completed 23 of 36 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers' 34-3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Edelman noted Young's ability to avoid mistakes and capitalize on opportunities, stating, "He's been really fun to watch, and he's coming into his own." Young's performance improved upon his Week 1 outing, where he threw for 361 yards in a loss to the Chicago Bears.
Gronkowski suggested that a benching earlier in the 2024 season was a turning point for Young. He commented that the benching was "necessary" and that the subsequent play of backup quarterback Andy Dalton "kind of lit a spark." Gronkowski added that since that point, Young has been playing at the level the Panthers desired.
Smith-Njigba recorded nine receptions for 155 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the Seahawks' 31-7 win against the Arizona Cardinals. The performance marked the first time in his career that he scored three touchdowns in a single game. The touchdowns came from quarterback Drew Lock, who started in place of an injured Sam Darnold.
Gronkowski selected Smith-Njigba, emphasizing his consistency and skill. "He proved once again why he was offensive player of the year and that it wasn't a mistake," Gronkowski said. He also highlighted Smith-Njigba's route-running ability, noting his effectiveness in creating separation from defenders.
Edelman commented on Smith-Njigba's smooth route-running and ability to outrun opponents. Gronkowski further elaborated on the difficulty defenders face in anticipating Smith-Njigba's breaks, calling him "one of the hardest players to defend in all of football."
Both Young and Smith-Njigba are set to continue their seasons in Week 3. The Panthers will face the Cleveland Browns, while the Seahawks are scheduled to play the Washington Commanders.
