Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood responded with apparent surprise when questioned about head coach Kyle Whittingham's public assessment of his performance and job security.

Whittingham stated Monday that Underwood's position as the starting quarterback is not guaranteed and that improvement is necessary. "It's not something that's infinite," Whittingham told reporters. "At some point, we've got to turn a corner, and we've got to see improvement."

During a media availability on Wednesday, Underwood was asked about Whittingham's remarks. "Um, there was comments about that?" he inquired, before later stating, "That's cool. I didn't see that. It's cool," after being reminded of the coach's statements.

This exchange followed Michigan's narrow 13-12 victory over Western Michigan in Week 1. The Wolverines' performance was marked by a clock controversy that extended the game, allowing Underwood to connect on a walk-off game-winning Hail Mary pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan. Excluding this final play, Underwood completed 11 of 21 passes for 127 yards. He also contributed to the running game with nine rushes for 47 yards and a touchdown. However, his passing throughout the game was described as indecisive, with frequent overthrows and underthrows.

Underwood, who reportedly received $12 million in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation to start at Michigan, has shown flashes of the arm strength and potential that made him a highly sought-after recruit. His performance in the season opener has led to questions about his consistency.

Michigan faces a more challenging matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners next weekend, a game where increased performance from the quarterback position will likely be scrutinized.
