Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper has publicly stated that he was deceived by FanDuel regarding a personalized Cameo video that the online sportsbook later used as a gambling promotion. Harper accused the company of taking advantage of an individual with a gambling addiction.

According to reports, Harper recorded a video for a VIP client named Terry Thompson, who reportedly lost $18.5 million through FanDuel and subsequently faced foreclosure on his home after taking out second and third mortgages. Thompson also sold a stake in a company he had owned for two decades.

Harper, who has no affiliation with FanDuel, explained on his Instagram story that he believed the request was for a personal holiday greeting and was unaware of its commercial intent. He stated that he joined Cameo to engage with fans through personalized videos and did not approve of the video being used for promotional purposes.

"Cameo had a separate category for business video requests, and at the time, I did not know this video would be used for commercial purposes," Harper said. "The request included a short script. I read it in good faith. FanDuel then put its own logo on the video and used it as a gambling promotion. I did not know FanDuel would do this, I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it."

Harpersaid he also was unaware of Thompson's gambling addiction. Thompson told The Philadelphia Inquirer that he was addicted to micro-betting and that FanDuel provided him with perks, including Super Bowl tickets. Thompson reportedly lost his final $10,000, leading to police being called to check on his welfare. Thompson is now suing both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Terry Thompson's VIP host at FanDuel, identified as 'Bryttanni,' submitted the Cameo request with a script that Harper read. The script included a holiday greeting and an expression of appreciation for Thompson's support over the years. Harper's public statement came on Monday, clarifying his position and emphasizing his lack of involvement beyond recording the video as requested.
