Bryan Kohberger's Legal Team Explores Options After Guilty Plea, Seeks Retrial
New legal counsel for the convicted Idaho student murders defendant is reportedly optimistic about challenging the conviction.
Bryan Kohberger's legal team is reportedly exploring avenues to challenge his conviction, even after his guilty plea in July 2025. Kohberger, who confessed to the murders of four University of Idaho students, is now being represented by a new legal team that includes attorney Jason Goldman.
Goldman, who joined Kohberger's post-conviction legal team in August, has expressed optimism about the case. He stated that Kohberger is aware of how the legal system operates and maintains a degree of "chilling optimism" about potentially walking free. This sentiment appears to contrast with the finality that the victims' families believed they had achieved with Kohberger's guilty plea.
Kohberger confessed to the brutal murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. The students were found stabbed to death in their Moscow, Idaho, home on November 13, 2022.
The defense is reportedly aiming to overturn Kohberger's guilty plea by arguing that his confession was not voluntary. Goldman indicated he plans to visit Kohberger in prison and has been communicating with him via phone calls.
Earlier this year, Kohberger had also professed his "absolute innocence" to The New York Times. The current legal strategy appears to focus on challenging the validity of his guilty plea, with the goal of initiating a retrial.
