Bryan Kohberger Hearings Canceled as Legal Battle Looms

Three scheduled court hearings for Bryan Kohberger, convicted in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, have been abruptly canceled. This move signals the commencement of a potentially lengthy post-conviction relief process, according to a family representative.

Kohberger was arrested in December 2022 in connection with the November 2022 murders. In July 2025, he entered a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty. However, he later petitioned the court to withdraw his plea, citing ineffective counsel and claims of being misled.

"This simply marks the start of a longer post-conviction relief process," stated Jason Goldman, an attorney representing Kohberger's family. The precise reasons for the cancellations are expected to be detailed in an amended scheduling order from Judge Steven Hippler, which has not yet been made public.

The first vacated hearing, initially set for Thursday, was intended to address a motion by Kohberger's Idaho attorney, Greg Rauch, seeking the disqualification of Judge Hippler due to alleged bias. Two other hearings scheduled for next year have also been vacated, and the cancellations are anticipated to impact deadlines in the coming months.

The November 2022 stabbings of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin occurred at an off-campus rental home. The case garnered significant national attention due to the brutality of the crime and the initial weeks without a publicly identified suspect.

Kohberger, a Ph.D. student in criminology at Washington State University, located about 10 miles from the University of Idaho, was arrested at his parents' home in Pennsylvania. He has offered no motive or explanation for the killings. In July, he filed a handwritten motion for post-conviction relief, asserting his innocence.
