Newly surfaced bodycam footage depicts the moment officers discovered the bodies of four University of Idaho students in their Moscow home. The release comes as Bryan Kohberger, who was convicted of the murders, now asserts his innocence and has filed to challenge his plea.
The footage, shown in a trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary "The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare," captures officers entering the residence and discovering the victims. In one segment, an officer reacts with a shocked expletive upon entering a second-floor bedroom where students Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were found. Another officer is heard gasping in a third-floor bedroom, where Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves were discovered.
An officer is heard over the radio stating, "We're gonna need everybody. We got four deceased." The documentary also includes interviews with the students' roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, who lived on the first floor and survived the attack. Funke recounts hearing a scream and seeing someone, while Mortensen reportedly encountered Kohberger as he left the house.
Moscow police had previously described the scene as the first homicide in the city in seven years and a significant crime scene for many of their officers. Photos from the scene showed dried blood in a kitchen sink.
Kohberger, a former criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, had confessed to the killings last year. As part of a plea agreement, he received four consecutive life sentences, avoiding a potential death sentence that could have resulted from a trial. However, he has recently filed a petition from prison, seeking to overturn his conviction. His legal team claims he was misled into the guilty plea through "false promises and blatant disinformation," and he maintains a claim of innocence.
Steve Goncalves, the father of victim Kaylee Goncalves, has expressed a desire for Kohberger to be held fully accountable, stating he would welcome a retrial. The documentary series is set to premiere on Netflix on Wednesday.
