Bruno Fernandes' Form Under Scrutiny Amid Manchester United's Struggles
Manchester United captain's statistics lag behind last season's record-breaking performance, raising questions about his impact on the team's early-season slump.
Seven weeks after receiving the PFA Player of the Year award for the 2025-26 season, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes finds himself and his team in a less celebratory position. His goal contributions and overall play have dipped compared to last season's phenomenal output, prompting analysis of whether Fernandes is a symptom or a cause of Manchester United's worst league start in 40 years.
Last season, Fernandes was instrumental in United's unexpected third-place finish, scoring nine goals and providing a Premier League record of 21 assists. Over the final 11 league games, he was directly involved in 12 of the team's 21 goals. His contributions were particularly vital during a seven-game winning streak that secured a return to European competition, where he was central to nine out of 12 goals.
This season, Fernandes has played every minute of Manchester United's six Premier League matches, registering three goals and one assist. While these numbers are statistically better than the opening six games of the previous term, a deeper look reveals concerning trends. His average of 3.3 shots per game is near his career best, but his shots on target average is at a joint-second lowest, and his chance creation rate is significantly down from last season's 4.0 per game. Notably, he has created only one 'big chance' this season, a stark contrast to averaging one per game last season.
This downturn in Fernandes's individual performance has coincided with Manchester United securing only six points from their opening six games. Manager Michael Carrick acknowledged that Fernandes was managing an issue but stated it was manageable and that the player was committed. "He was carrying something but that happens a lot," Carrick said. "Players play with issues. It's not ideal but it is manageable. Bruno is able to play."
The absence of key teammates from last season, such as Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro, is also being felt. Sesko's continued absence due to a shin injury leaves a void in attack, while Casemiro's midfield presence provided a stable platform that allowed Fernandes to take more risks. The club's decision not to sign additional striking support in the summer, coupled with injuries to players like Amad Diallo, has led to tactical adjustments. Matheus Cunha, often dropping deep into Fernandes's space, has highlighted a potential lack of effective attacking synergy.
Fernandes's decision-making appears affected by these restrictive circumstances, with a notable instance of taking 23 minutes to complete a pass in a recent match against Tottenham. Despite the team's struggles and Carrick's statement that no player is guaranteed a place, leaving out the captain is not currently being considered. However, for Manchester United to improve, Fernandes must rediscover his previous form. Carrick remains confident in his captain's ability to do so. "He's a top player, Bruno," he said. "Sometimes things don't quite go for you. Sometimes you have a spell of that. But he's done some incredible things for this football club and he will do the same in the future, there's no doubt about that."
