Bruno Fernandes' Captaincy Under Scrutiny After Public Criticism
Former players and pundits question Manchester United captain's public comments on team tactics and performance.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has drawn criticism from former players and pundits for publicly questioning team tactics and performance, with some labeling his behavior as unbecoming of a club captain. The remarks have added to mounting pressure on the team, which has struggled at the start of the season.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool vice-captain, stated on CBS Sports that Fernandes' actions, such as throwing his arms up during games and publicly calling out the manager, are "an absolute disgrace" and "not what a Manchester United captain should be." Carragher argued that Fernandes' perceived effort is often for the crowd rather than effective pressing, hindering the rest of the team.
Fernandes' comments follow a similar public statement by defender Lisandro Martinez, who called for more investment in the squad and greater input from the technical director. Martinez later apologized for his remarks.
Kasper Schmeichel, son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, expressed concern on BBC Radio 5 Live that Fernandes' comments, while understandable given the team's struggles, exacerbate the club's problems. "With experience you learn that you need to keep these things in-house," Schmeichel said, adding that the situation "is exposing all of the issues that are at Manchester United."
Stephen Warnock, a former Liverpool defender, noted on BBC Match of the Day that senior players should address tactical disagreements internally rather than airing them publicly. Joe Cole, former Chelsea midfielder, described the captain's public questioning of the manager as "sacrilege."
Andy Mitten, editor of United We Stand, told BBC 5 Live Breakfast that Fernandes had "thrown his coach under the bus," calling it a "terrible look." Mitten acknowledged that fans are divided on the matter, noting that Martinez's earlier criticism resonated with many supporters.
Fernandes, who joined Manchester United in January 2020, has been a consistent performer for the club, scoring 111 goals and providing 106 assists in 338 games across all competitions. He was appointed captain in the summer of 2023 by former manager Erik ten Hag. However, his body language and attitude have been criticized before, including after a 7-0 loss to Liverpool in 2023, when he was called a "disgrace" by club legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane. Despite past criticism, he was named the Premier League's player of the year last season after a record 21 assists.
In August 2025, Fernandes stated that the club needed to make more signings. Later that year, he expressed hurt over a potential transfer, revealing that the club indicated it would not be a significant loss if he departed. He stated that he chose to stay due to his love for the club and family reasons.
The club has not yet commented on whether Fernandes' captaincy is in jeopardy. The team is scheduled to play Bournemouth next. Martinez, after his apology, retained his place in the starting lineup for the subsequent match.
