Bruno Fernandes Addresses Cristiano Ronaldo's Exit from Portugal Camp
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has spoken about his attempts to mediate a dispute involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal manager Jorge Jesus.
Bruno Fernandes has revealed he has held conversations with Cristiano Ronaldo following the star player's departure from the Portugal national team camp. Ronaldo left the team after comments made by manager Jorge Jesus in a press conference, which led to Ronaldo missing training sessions and subsequently leaving the camp before a match against Denmark.
Ronaldo, 41, confirmed on Instagram that he had left the team due to Jesus's remarks. The manager had stated that Ronaldo would not start the match against Denmark, despite insisting there was no issue between them. Ronaldo's future with the national team is now uncertain.
Fernandes stated that players understand how to manage team situations and that their primary role is to achieve results. He spoke with Ronaldo, emphasizing his enduring status as the national team's greatest symbol and a figure deeply respected by the Portuguese people.
"He has a reserved place not only among the best of all time, but also in the hearts of the Portuguese people," Fernandes said. "We cannot divide ourselves; the national team is one, and all parties should resolve their issues behind closed doors. I think that's how it will be, and that everything will end well on both sides."
Fernandes urged the country not to take sides or become divided over the issue, reiterating that Ronaldo deserves respect. He added that the team is focused on their performance and that such matters should be handled internally.
Portugal secured a 4-2 victory on Thursday night under Jorge Jesus, who took over coaching duties after the World Cup. Jesus asserted his control over the team, stating that the players believe in his ideas and that their individual quality makes the process smoother. "If that's having a group in my hand, then I do, because they go hand in hand with me and my ideas," he commented.
Ronaldo stated in his own announcement that he had decided to leave the camp after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation. He promised to reveal the reasons for his departure at a later time and wished his teammates good luck.
Fernandes's intervention comes as Ronaldo has also reportedly liked social media posts critical of the treatment he has received compared to other players, such as Lionel Messi. Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, maintains that he has a clear conscience regarding the situation and that the team remains united despite the controversies.
