Bruce Pearl Hails Robert Kraft as 'Hero' for Banning Macklemore

Former Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl has lauded New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft as a "hero and a patriot" for banning rapper Macklemore from Gillette Stadium. Pearl, a prominent Jewish voice in college sports, stated on "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich" that Kraft took a necessary stand against antisemitism.

Pearl argued that Macklemore's messaging has crossed the line from political commentary into hate speech. He elaborated on the phrase "Free Palestine," suggesting that for some, it implies the removal of Jewish people from the region. "How would you free Palestine of the Jews? Well, you either scare them off, run them off, or murder them," Pearl said.

Macklemore's recent performances, including at Ed Sheeran's tour at MetLife Stadium, have drawn controversy for anti-Israel sentiments and his protest track "Hind's Hall." Kraft's decision to ban the artist from Gillette Stadium cited Macklemore's past controversies, including a 2014 outfit criticized as an antisemitic caricature of a Hasidic Jew. This move by Kraft reportedly led to tour promoters canceling Macklemore's appearances at other venues.

Pearl cautioned that many repeat activist slogans without fully understanding their historical context and implications. He noted that chants to "globalize the Intifada" evoke historical periods of violent attacks against civilians. "Asking for somebody's death is not free speech," Pearl asserted. "It is hate speech, and it should not be allowed."

Pearl emphasized that leaders have a responsibility to speak out against hate, drawing a parallel to the civil rights era. "We grew up in a time where Dr. King talked about silence as complicity," he told Dakich. "Therefore, as a coach, when we see something wrong... we take action because our silence as teachers and educators is complicity."

Concluding his remarks, Pearl stated that Kraft demonstrated leadership by acting to protect his community. "Robert Kraft is the owner of a business. He has a responsibility as a leader in the community. When given the opportunity, he did not remain silent and he went and did something," Pearl said. "Sometimes actions have consequences, but sometimes inaction is actually worse. Robert Kraft is not a coward. He is a hero, and he is a patriot."
