Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys Spotted in Montecito

Bruce Johnston, a Grammy-winning musician and longtime member of The Beach Boys, was recently photographed enjoying a leisurely breakfast in Montecito, California. The 84-year-old, who announced earlier this year that he would be stepping away from touring after six decades with the iconic band, appeared sprightly and upbeat during the outing.

Johnston visited the Montecito Coffee Shop on September 8, dressed casually in a T-shirt, black pants, sneakers, and a black cap. He ordered oats, fresh berries, orange juice, and coffee. According to an onlooker, Johnston was in an outgoing mood, engaging in conversation with other customers and staff, and sharing stories from his career.

Despite the pleasant interaction, Johnston was reportedly overheard remarking on the high cost of food, noting that prices had increased significantly since his last visit over a year prior.

Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965, succeeding co-founder Brian Wilson on tour. He has been a significant contributor as a vocalist and songwriter, penning hits such as 'Disney Girls,' 'Deirdre,' and 'Tears in the Morning.' He briefly left the band in 1972 before rejoining in 1978 and remaining a member until 2026. His contributions also extend to solo work, including writing Barry Manilow's 1975 number-one hit 'I Write the Songs,' which earned a Grammy for Song of the Year.

In March, Johnston announced his decision to step away from touring, stating his intention to focus on songwriting and "developing a speaking-engagement chapter" of his career. He indicated he would still participate in special performances, including an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday. With Johnston's departure from touring, co-founder Mike Love remains the last original member actively performing with The Beach Boys.
