Bruce Arians Supports NFL Suspensions for Officials' Conduct

Super Bowl-winning coach Bruce Arians has expressed support for recent NFL decisions to suspend officials for unprofessional conduct, stating he is “glad to see” the league implementing new accountability measures. The NFL suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one game following separate incidents where they engaged in unprofessional conduct toward players.

Seeman received his suspension for a late-game exchange with Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. During the interaction, Seeman was observed mouthing obscenities towards McBride, who had been frustrated over an unflagged contact play. Hill’s suspension stemmed from an incident where Miami Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon blocked Vikings linebacker Eric Willson into him, knocking the official to the ground. Hill then confronted Wilson directly before ordering him back to the huddle.

The NFL Players Association Executive Director JC Tretter commented on social media, deeming the officials’ behavior unacceptable and stating that players are held to the same standard. "Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard," Tretter wrote.

Arians, who previously coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in 2021, acknowledged that interactions between players and officials can become heated. However, he noted that under the new collective bargaining agreement between referees and the NFL, the league has the authority to act when rules are crossed.

"I did see it and I am surprised a little bit because there was never accountability before," Arians told OutKick. "Under the new collective bargaining agreement with officials, there’s a lot more accountability and I’m glad to see that."

While Arians admitted to having numerous run-ins with referees during his coaching career, he found it particularly surprising that the recent incidents involved players directly confronting officials, rather than coaches. "I was surprised it was more with a player than a coach, because coaches can go way overboard," Arians explained. "But I think that’s a very, very important thing that the NFL now has control."

He believes these suspensions send a clear message that such behavior from officials will not be tolerated moving forward, indicating a positive shift in how the league manages on-field conduct. "It’s a great thing I think," Arians concluded.
