Two brothers have been jailed for a fatal crash that killed a father-of-two and seriously injured his nine-year-old son. The collision occurred near Welshpool, Powys, in November 2024 when a BMW X3, driven by Abubakr Ben Yusaf, drifted sideways and collided head-on with a Toyota Yaris.

Abubakr Ben Yusaf received a 14-year prison sentence after being convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and causing death while uninsured. His brother, Umar Ben Yusaf, who was driving behind him, was sentenced to two years and nine months for causing death and serious injury by careless driving.

The victim, Rhys Jenkins, a rugby referee, was on his way to take his son, Ioan, to watch Wales play Australia in Cardiff, their first rugby match together, when the crash occurred. Ioan was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

The brothers, who are both optometrists, were traveling from Aberystwyth to Manchester. According to witnesses, they were racing each other on the A483 between Newtown and Welshpool. They were observed aggressively tailgating other vehicles and flashing headlights before overtaking recklessly in the moments leading up to the collision. Both brothers fled the scene immediately after the crash while witnesses assisted in rescuing Ioan from the car. Approximately 40 minutes after the incident, Umar Ben Yusaf returned to the area and informed a police community support officer that the individual responsible for the crash was with him.
