Two brothers, Charlie Campbell, 21, and Tyler Campbell, 23, have been sentenced for assaulting an Uber Eats delivery driver over a late McDonald's order. The incident occurred on January 13 when the courier, Stephen Onwuegbule, arrived with the food order to their home in Chatham, Kent.
The brothers became aggressive upon Mr. Onwuegbule's arrival, berating him for the delay. According to prosecutor Alan Balneaves, the brothers surrounded the delivery driver, charged at him, and struck him with their fists until he was on the floor. The assault continued, resulting in Mr. Onwuegbule sustaining a split lip and a bloodshot eye.
When police arrived at the scene, the brothers admitted to their actions. They were subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
Appearing in court in June, the brothers pleaded guilty and pre-sentencing reports were ordered. They were sentenced together at Medway Magistrates' Court on August 27.
Both were handed 12-month community orders. Tyler Campbell is required to complete 15 rehabilitation sessions, while Charlie Campbell must complete 20. Additionally, both brothers were ordered to perform 300 hours of unpaid work. They were also each ordered to pay Mr. Onwuegbule £250 in compensation, with payments to be made at a rate of £20 per month.
During the sentencing hearing, the defense attorney noted that both brothers had a volatile upbringing and had experienced significant trauma. The court considered jail time or a suspended sentence but ultimately decided on community orders due to the pre-sentencing report's recommendations, the early guilty pleas, and the brothers' previous good character.
The chairman of the bench described the incident as 'extremely serious' and stated that the victim did not deserve such treatment, acknowledging that the brothers had shown remorse. Magistrates did not impose any restrictions on the brothers' ability to use Uber Eats in the future.
