Brother Recounts Grief and Mistreatment After Detective's Murder
Family of slain Detective Garda Colm Horkan faced alleged mistreatment and were denied the opportunity to identify his body, according to his brother.
The brother of slain Detective Garda Colm Horkan has detailed the "brutal" treatment his family allegedly experienced on the night of the detective's murder and in its aftermath, including not being asked to identify his body. Dermot Horkan recounted the family's anguish and the perceived lack of respect shown to them during an emotional statement.
"They didn't even ask us to identify his body," Dermot Horkan stated, his voice filled with grief. The family's pain was compounded by what they described as a dismissive approach to their loss.
Photos displayed in the Horkan family home include one of Colm Horkan at his passing out day at Templemore, standing alongside Garda Adrian Donohoe. Donohoe was another officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty. The presence of these photos underscores the shared experiences and sacrifices within the Garda force.
Stephen Silver was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Colm Horkan. The conviction brought a measure of closure, but the emotional toll on the Horkan family remains.
Colm Horkan's career as a Garda was marked by dedication. Mementos from his service were displayed, serving as a testament to his commitment. A graduation photo from Templemore Garda Training College in 1995 shows a young Horkan.
The family, including Dermot Horkan, sat beside a display case filled with these cherished items, each representing a part of Colm's life and service.
The brother's account highlights the profound personal impact of such a loss and the critical importance of respectful handling of deceased officers' families during times of tragedy.
