Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, the brother of a former leader of one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels, has pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to traffic cocaine and methamphetamine into the United States. Prosecutors stated that Oseguera Cervantes worked with his brother, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho," who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
El Mencho was arrested in May 2023 and is awaiting trial in the U.S. on charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, and extortion. His brother, Antonio, was apprehended in November 2022.
The CJNG is considered one of the most violent cartels in Mexico and is a primary trafficker of fentanyl and methamphetamine into the United States. The cartel has been implicated in numerous killings and acts of violence, including the assassinations of political figures and law enforcement officers.
Antonio Oseguera Cervantes' plea agreement is part of a broader effort by U.S. authorities to dismantle the leadership of the CJNG. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in combating international drug trafficking organizations and their impact on both Mexico and the United States.
