Brother of 'Milk Carton Kid' Dies at 39, Unanswered Questions Remain About Sibling's Disappearance

Lee O'Toole, the brother of one of the 'Milk Carton Kids,' has died at the age of 39, having spent 30 years searching for answers about the disappearance of his sibling, David Spencer, and David's friend, Patrick 'Paddy' Warren.

The two schoolboys vanished without a trace on Boxing Day in 1996 after going out to play in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham. Detectives initially treated the case as a runaway situation, stating there was no evidence of foul play. David was 13 and Patrick was 11 at the time of their disappearance.

The pair became known nationally as the 'Milk Carton Kids' after police printed appeals for information on milk cartons in an effort to locate them. Despite numerous appeals and searches over the years, their bodies have never been found. The last known sighting of David and Patrick was at a petrol station at 12:45 a.m. on December 27, 1996.

A Channel 4 documentary suggested that child killer Brian Field may have been seen with the boys in the days leading up to their vanishing. Field, who was living in Solihull at the time, was later interviewed by police in 2006 as part of a review of the case. He denied any involvement, and police considered him one of several lines of inquiry. Field was convicted in 2001 for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old schoolboy in 1968 and died in prison in February 2024 at age 87.

In 2021, Lee O'Toole, who was nine when his brother disappeared, led a dig near Solihull Moors FC after receiving a tip-off following the TV documentary. Hundreds of volunteers assisted in the search of land off Damson Wood Lane, but no remains of the boys were found.

Family members confirmed that Lee passed away on September 16, never having learned what happened to his brother. A statement on the 'Milk Carton Kids' social media page expressed grief over Lee's passing and gratitude for his determination in the search. "We know now that Lee will have the answers he has always wanted and will be with David and that's all he ever wanted," the post read.

Friends and well-wishers have paid tribute to Lee, recalling his bravery and determination. A GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral costs has raised over £2,600.

Previously, in 2016, Lee spoke about the family's enduring agony on the 20th anniversary of the disappearance. He described David as his 'backbone' and a role model, lamenting the 'empty void' left by his brother's disappearance. He pleaded for anyone with information to come forward, stating, "It's the not knowing. We need to find out where he is and put it to rest for the family's sake."

The investigation into David and Patrick's disappearance has seen several developments over the years. In 2003, a 37-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case but was later released on bail without charge. In 2006, police stated they were "closer than ever" to solving the mystery, but no one has ever been charged. In 2020, human bones were discovered at a building site near where the boys vanished, but investigations confirmed the remains predated their disappearance.

The last known sighting of the boys was at a Shell petrol station in Chelmsley Wood, Solihull, shortly after midnight on December 27, 1996. An attendant provided them with a packet of biscuits before they left. They were reported missing the following morning, initiating a nationwide investigation that has continued for nearly three decades without closure for the families.
