Brooklyn Bar Owner's Viral Encounter With Conan O'Brien Sparks New Career Aspirations
A chance meeting on the subway led to a 90-second video that has dramatically shifted the life of Debbie Shields.
Debbie Shields, a 68-year-old bar owner from Brooklyn, has seen her life transformed following a brief, impromptu interaction with comedian Conan O'Brien on a New York City subway train. The encounter, captured on video for Kareem Rahma's "Subway Takes" series, has gone viral, bringing Shields unexpected fame and prompting her to consider a new career in comedy.
The incident occurred on the F train when Shields, traveling with a friend, decided to approach O'Brien, who was filming a segment. Playing along with O'Brien's playful banter, Shields pretended they were once married with two children, one in medical school and the other in jail. The quick-witted exchange, filled with laughter, lasted approximately 90 seconds.
"One minute and 29 seconds changed my life," Shields told CBS News, referring to the duration of the clip. The video has since garnered widespread attention, with people now visiting her establishment, Confessions Bar in Bed-Stuy, specifically to meet her.
Shields, who already hosts weekly comedy nights at her bar, is now contemplating stepping into stand-up comedy herself. "I do go onstage and introduce the comedians, but that’s my limit," she told The New York Times. "I just might do [start doing stand-up], because it sounds interesting."
Her newfound public recognition has led to new opportunities and connections. Rahma, the creator of "Subway Takes," has visited Confessions Bar, and Shields mentioned that O'Brien might even make an appearance for karaoke. As a nod to the viral moment, Shields has added a drink called "The Baby Daddy O'Brien" to her bar's menu.
Shields described herself as someone who enjoys making people laugh and having fun, stating, "I love to enjoy life, because life is beautiful. It’s what you make it." This philosophy appears to be guiding her as she embraces this unexpected turn in her life.
