A 45-year-old Bronx resident has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, the son of a retired NYPD detective. William Ferrer was arrested Sunday outside his home, authorities announced.

Police believe Freytes was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shooting outside the Wanda Super Market & Deli in Mount Eden on Saturday. The boy had reportedly gone to the bodega to buy a ball when the incident occurred.

"Jacob was an innocent bystander on his bike when he was taken from his family yesterday in an act of senseless gun violence," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated on X. "No arrest can ever ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, but the NYPD will continue to do everything in our power to seek justice for Jacob."

Ferrer faces charges including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree attempted murder, assault, and illegal weapons possession, according to Tisch. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, but police suspect it may be gang-related.

Jacob Freytes was the son of retired Bronx Detective Sgt. Jesus Freytes, who previously served in the 44th Precinct.
