Broncos Cornerbacks Surtain and Moss Injured in Loss to 49ers
Denver loses both starting cornerbacks and receiver Pat Bryant to injuries during Sunday's game.
The Denver Broncos suffered a significant blow on Sunday as both starting cornerbacks, Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss, sustained injuries during the team's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Wide receiver Pat Bryant also had to be carted off the field with an apparent leg injury.
Surtain, a four-time Pro Bowler, left the game late in the second quarter with a non-contact ankle injury. He was ruled out of the game after halftime. The 28-year-old cornerback had signed a four-year contract extension worth $96 million with the Broncos in 2024, which was restructured before the current season to increase his 2026 salary by $5 million.
Moss was sidelined with a rib injury. Bryant was injured in the third quarter and required a cart to leave the field.
Broncos coach Sean Payton acknowledged the impact of the injuries. "It makes it harder," Payton told reporters. "You go 16 weeks, and that might happen once every two years. And yet, you have to be ready. Certainly, it affects [defensive coordinator] Vance [Joseph] and what you want to call. It affects whether you’re going to be able to get into dime. Maybe you can play nickel still. But it’s going to take you out of some packages."
