Broncos Coach Sean Payton Addresses Controversial Penalty in Rams Victory

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton addressed a pivotal defensive pass interference penalty that occurred late in his team's 30-26 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. The call negated a potential interception by Rams quarterback Josh Wallace and ultimately paved the way for the Broncos' game-winning touchdown.

Pat Bryant, the Broncos receiver involved in the play, admitted to embellishing the contact. "I sold it just a little bit," Bryant said. The penalty occurred on third-and-6 from the Rams' 11-yard line with just over a minute remaining and the Broncos trailing 26-23. Replays showed some pushing and grabbing between Bryant and Wallace as they ran toward the sideline, with Wallace appearing to intercept Russell Wilson's pass.

Despite Bryant's admission, he insisted that Wallace did interfere "just a little bit." The penalty gave the Broncos a first down at the 7-yard line. Three plays later, another penalty on the Rams for illegal use of the hands moved the ball to the 2-yard line. A subsequent encroachment penalty by the Rams near the goal line set up a game-winning touchdown pass from Bo Nix.

Payton, when asked about the incident, suggested it was a natural reaction rather than something practiced. "I think there’s nothing that anyone works on. If they’re trying to catch a pass or… it’s not something that’s practiced," Payton said. "I don’t know other than (Bryant's) natural reaction, outside of that, there’s really nothing we look at."

Rules analyst Terry McAulay, who was consulted during the broadcast, noted that the receiver appeared to grab the defender, and he did not see the defender significantly hinder the receiver. Pass interference calls are not reviewable in the NFL, meaning the officials' decision stood.

The Rams were flagged for 13 penalties in the game compared to the Broncos' five. Rams coach Sean McVay declined to comment extensively on the officiating, stating, "I’m not going to play the victim card. It doesn’t really matter. It is what it is. That was the call that was made."

Some observers drew parallels to a controversial pass interference call in the 2018 NFC Championship game involving Payton's New Orleans Saints and the Rams. Former Rams player Andrew Whitworth humorously posted on X, "Well Coach Payton finally got his P.I. call! I say we call it even." Payton, however, dismissed the comparison, noting it was a different game with different players years later.
