Broadcast Networks Show Strong Negative Bias Against Trump, Study Claims

Broadcast news networks are exhibiting a significant negative bias against Donald Trump and the Republican party, according to a recent study by the Media Research Center. The study analyzed evening newscasts from ABC, CBS, and NBC between July 21 and October 25, finding that 85% of coverage for Trump was negative, while Democratic nominee Kamala Harris received 78% positive coverage.

This trend appears to be continuing in the current election cycle. From September 28 to October 26, the study found that ABC, CBS, and NBC evening newscasts dedicated nearly 57 minutes to negative coverage of Trump and Republicans, while Democrats received approximately 19 minutes of negative coverage, a ratio of three-to-one.

The report also examined PBS News Hour, which from September 1 to September 30, presented 94% negative coverage for the GOP versus 6% positive. Democrats on PBS received more balanced coverage, with 53% negative and 47% positive.

The Media Research Center suggests that this disparity in reporting frames Trump and the Republican party in a consistently negative light. Themes such as the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack and claims of Trump being a "danger to democracy" or a "fascist" have dominated coverage. Even when reporting on events that might negatively affect Democrats, such as the raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar's home, the coverage was framed within the context of the Trump administration's actions.

Conversely, the study asserts that the networks frame Democratic unity as a positive, while Republican unity is presented as a failing. Dissenting Republicans who gain media attention are promoted, while dissenting Democrats are largely ignored. The growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America faction within the Democratic party and their policy proposals have not been thoroughly examined by the networks, according to the report.

The study also notes that Republican oversight hearings into subjects like President Joe Biden's use of the autopen or his mental fitness were largely ignored, in contrast to the extensive coverage given to the House's January 6 hearings during Trump's presidency. Republican rallies are often portrayed as signs of desperation, while similar appearances by former President Barack Obama in Democratic areas are not framed in the same way.
