Brittney Griner's Wife Demands More Child Support Amid Divorce Battle

WNBA star Brittney Griner is entangled in a contentious divorce battle, with her wife, Cherelle, reportedly filing new court documents requesting increased child support and joint legal custody of their son, Bash.

Griner initially filed for divorce in July, citing an "irretrievably broken" marriage. The divorce documents were officially submitted in Fulton County, with the couple having been married since 2018 and separating on July 24.

In her recent filings, Cherelle Griner highlighted Brittney Griner's significantly higher earnings as a professional basketball player and requested that this disparity be considered when determining financial support. She also asked the court to make decisions on physical custody and parenting time based on the best interests of their two-year-old son.

This legal dispute unfolds years after Cherelle Griner stood by Brittney during her nearly 10-month detention in Russia in 2022. Griner was arrested for carrying less than a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage, which she attributed to a "mental lapse" while packing. She received a nine-year prison sentence before her release in December 2024 through a prisoner swap orchestrated by the Biden Administration, exchanging her for arms dealer Viktor Bout.

During her time in Russian prison, Griner had offered Cherelle an "out" from their relationship, recognizing the severity of her sentence. However, Cherelle remained steadfast, offering support throughout the ordeal. Griner has since played for the Phoenix Mercury, the Atlanta Dream, and most recently joined the Connecticut Sun in free agency, with a contract reportedly worth over $1 million.
