WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage. The filing was made on Thursday in the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia.
According to court documents, the couple, who married in June 2018, have been separated since July 24, 2026. The petition states that the marriage is "irretrievably broken" with "no hope of reconciliation."
Brittney Griner is seeking joint physical custody of their son, Bash, who was welcomed in 2024. The petition also requests an "equitable division" of all marital debts and assets.
An attorney for Brittney Griner provided a statement to ABC News, saying, "This is a matter we hope the parties can resolve privately. There is no further comment at this time." Cherelle Griner has been contacted for comment.
The divorce filing comes more than two years after Brittney Griner was detained in Russia in February 2022, accused of possessing vape cartridges containing hashish oil. She was held for 10 months and sentenced to nine years in prison before being released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap. Cherelle Griner was an active advocate for her wife's release during her detention.
In a December 2022 Instagram post following her return to the United States, Brittney Griner expressed gratitude for the support she received, writing, "The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn. I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going."
