WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, in Fulton County, Georgia, according to court documents. The filing, made on Thursday, states that the marriage is "irretrievably broken" and that the couple has been separated since July 24.

Brittney Griner is also seeking joint legal custody of their 2-year-old son, Bash. A representative for Brittney Griner did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report the news.

The couple first met while attending Baylor University in Texas and married in June 2018. Cherelle Griner, an attorney, became a prominent advocate for Brittney Griner's release in 2022 after the basketball star was detained in Russia on drug-smuggling charges. Brittney Griner was convicted and sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony before her release in a prisoner exchange in December 2022.

Brittney and Cherelle Griner welcomed their son, Bash, in July 2024. Brittney Griner has previously described motherhood as life-changing.

This is Brittney Griner's second divorce. She was previously married to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, a marriage that lasted only weeks before Griner filed for an annulment in 2015.
