Britney Spears recently shared a candid reflection on her Instagram account, discussing the lasting emotional impact of her 13-year conservatorship and stating that she is currently not in a romantic relationship. The singer posted a video of herself in black lingerie, accompanied by a lengthy caption detailing her feelings.
"I feel like, still to this day, people don't realize the real damage that was done to my heart and soul in the conservatorship," Spears wrote. She also commented on her current relationship status, saying, "I've been single for so long," approximately two years after her divorce from Sam Asghari.
In her post, Spears reflected on her past self, noting, "I actually miss the way I respected people so much that there was a genuine mystery of acute oneness when we were together, which was sacred." She recalled being "painfully shy" earlier in her career but feeling more comfortable embodying a different persona on stage. However, she felt that after having children, that performance aspect became "beyond overdone" and left her feeling "silly and embarrassed."
This reflection follows an earlier post where Spears criticized her father, Jamie Spears. She described how, early in her career, the prospect of meeting more than 10 people would cause her to experience asthma and shaking. She alleged that her father later made her meet "70 people," which she stated "literally hurt" and made her feel "like a robot."
Spears expressed pride in having "shutting all that down," asserting that for many years, these experiences were "forced." The conservatorship, which was established in February 2008 following a series of public mental health challenges and intense media scrutiny, was terminated in November 2021.
Her father, who served as the primary conservator for much of the legal arrangement, maintained that his control was for her well-being, while Spears has characterized the conservatorship as abusive. Since its termination, Spears has frequently posted dance videos from her home. In March, she was charged with a DUI in Westlake Village, California, subsequently pleading guilty and receiving a 12-month probation sentence, a fine, and mandated participation in alcohol and drug education programs. She was also ordered to undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluations and is prohibited from consuming alcohol and drugs, with exceptions for prescription medication.
