Britney Spears has publicly stated she believes she has “failed as a mother” and expressed significant criticism of her parents in a lengthy social media post.
Spears, 44, shared her feelings on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday, referencing an apparent past photo of her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19. The singer revealed that one of her sons recently told her he does not believe in God, a statement that deeply affected her.
"I firmly believe I am an angel, and it hurts," Spears wrote. "Time is in a different realm when you’re an angel… I miss the excitement in my eves being alive."
She also accused her estranged parents, Jamie Spears and Lynne Spears, of taking her sons to the beach without her permission approximately five years ago. Spears recounted a memory where her father allegedly prevented her from visiting a diner with a friend, stating the attention from paparazzi after she had been confined to her home for four months offended him.
"The whole summer … I look back now and I remember my dad not letting me go to a diner ever again to eat a hamburger with a new extremely cool friend I had found cuz all the attention I got from the paps after being held in my home for 4 months offended him," Spears penned.
Spears described feeling “demoralized” by her parents' alleged actions, stating she “went to my knees and cried for two months.”
She further elaborated on her past, claiming she “never got to be me” despite being “unbelievably intelligent” due to being “brainwashed into an ignorant system where every goddamn person took advantage of me.”
The singer, who shares her sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline, has had a tumultuous public life since her rise to fame as a teenager. She was under a conservatorship for 13 years, which was terminated in November 2021. Spears had testified that her father exerted control over her life, including alleged forced birth control and unwilling work engagements.
Since the termination of the conservatorship, Spears has been active on social media, sharing videos of her dancing and occasional rants. In March, she was arrested for a DUI and subsequently entered a rehabilitation facility. She reportedly completed rehab in April and was described as being "healthy and happy and feeling very positive and excited to start afresh."
In May, Spears accepted a "wet reckless" plea deal, which requires her to complete a three-month alcohol school program and a one-year informal probation. Despite these legal challenges, she has reportedly reconnected with her sons, who allegedly encouraged her to seek rehabilitation.
Spears concluded her post by expressing a desire to share her perspective openly after feeling misunderstood for much of her life. She stated, "I want to get closer to God and get my heart in its most beautiful, spiritual way and have dreams again like I did when I used to go to Mexico!!!"
