Britney Spears has publicly stated she "failed as a mother" and expressed remorse for past mistakes, detailing feelings of demoralization stemming from her parents' actions. In a post on the social media platform X, Spears reflected on a conversation with one of her sons who expressed disbelief in God, which prompted her to confess her perceived shortcomings.
"My son told me last week it was all science he didn't personally believe in God… in that moment I believed I had failed as a mother because I know there is a Holy Spirit that sits high in the kingdom of heaven," Spears wrote. She added, "I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I'm sorry for my mistakes in the past."
Spears also recounted learning approximately five years ago that her parents, Jamie Spears and Lynne Spears, had taken her sons to the beach without her knowledge or consent. She shared an old photograph of her sons, Sean and Jayden, as toddlers running on a beach, implying these were the outings she discovered.
"The pictures I saw of my mom and dad in secret on the beach the whole summer with my children every weekend… I wondered why I wasn't a part of their cool secret outings," Spears stated. She described feeling "demoralized" and that the situation left her crying for two months.
Spears' post touched upon her experience under a court-ordered conservatorship, which began in 2008 and was largely controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. The conservatorship ended in November 2021 after 13 years, following public pressure and her own court testimony detailing alleged abuse suffered under her father's control. She alluded to feeling that she "never got to be me" and was "brainwashed into an ignorant system where every g*****m person took advantage of me."
She characterized herself as an angel who misses the "excitement in my eyes being alive when I was younger, always so eager to please and hungry for life." Spears indicated that as she has aged, she has come to understand her "real value as a woman" and questioned how a government could permit such experiences.
The singer concluded her post by emphasizing that people are "simply just people at the end of the day," and that she is "simply mamma now." She expressed a desire to "get closer to God and my heart in its most beautiful, spiritual way and have dreams again."
In a separate reflection on past events, Spears mentioned a reckless driving incident in March 2023 that resulted in a plea deal for reckless driving, leading to 12 months of probation and credited jail time. Following the legal resolution, she described engaging in arts and crafts, particularly in her kitchen, which she associated with emotional issues and family gatherings. She stated, "I have a lot of emotional issues that come up in my kitchen… I have no idea why."
