Britney Spears Expresses Lingering Bitterness Over Conservatorship
The pop star took to social media to share her frustrations regarding the conservatorship managed by her parents.
Britney Spears has voiced ongoing resentment towards her parents concerning the 13-year conservatorship that governed her life. In a since-deleted Instagram post, the singer shared her feelings of bitterness and frustration.
Spears, in a caption accompanying a lingerie video, reflected on the period of her life under conservatorship. She wrote that she was "literally insane" during that time, but noted the irony of being labeled "crazy" by others. "Yes, I’m bitter, all the hours, seconds, time, and secretly, subconsciously knowing my capabilities as a woman," she stated.
The singer also mentioned restrictions she faced, claiming she was unable to travel to visit friends for 15 years and only gained the ability to hold her own money five years prior. "People sit back and honestly say I’m the crazy one… Jesus f
king Christ…" Spears wrote.
The conservatorship was initially put in place in February 2008, following a period of public mental health and personal struggles for Spears. She publicly addressed the court in July 2021, describing the conservatorship as "abusive" and directly stating her desire to "get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse." Spears characterized the experience as "f
king cruelty."
Spears was released from the conservatorship in November 2021. Since then, she has remained estranged from her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears. She maintains a relationship with her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, from her marriage to Kevin Federline.
Following the termination of the conservatorship, Spears married Sam Asghari in 2022, though they divorced in 2024. Spears released a memoir in October 2023 detailing her experiences. In March 2026, she was arrested for a DUI, and in May, her attorney accepted a "wet reckless" plea, resulting in one year of informal probation and mandatory alcohol education.
