Britney Spears Expresses Bitterness Over Conservatorship in Lingerie Post
The pop star criticized her parents and those who called her 'crazy' during her 13-year conservatorship.
Britney Spears recently shared her feelings of bitterness regarding her 13-year conservatorship, expressing frustration over the control exerted by her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, and those who labeled her as "crazy." In a new Instagram video, the 44-year-old singer, dressed in lingerie, detailed her experiences and stated she felt "victimized" by the suppression of her creativity and unique way of processing the world.
Spears recalled working seven days a week for 15 years without the freedom to even travel to see a friend. She also mentioned that she was only able to hold her first dollar bill five years ago, a fact she found incredulous given the circumstances. "Yes, I’m bitter, all the hours, seconds, time, and secretly, subconsciously knowing my capabilities as a woman," she wrote in a lengthy caption.
She reflected on her past as an "innocent girl" who was told what to believe, likening it to being told the sky was yellow. Spears admitted to being "literally insane" at times but questioned the definition of madness when her intelligence and way of thinking were stifled. The singer also touched upon her perception of power, mentioning how acquiring new shoes and lingerie made her feel empowered and led her to re-evaluate her experiences.
Spears's conservatorship, which began in February 2008 following a series of public mental health crises, was terminated in November 2021. Her father, Jamie Spears, served as the primary conservator for most of this period, asserting that his actions were for her well-being. However, Britney Spears has consistently described the conservatorship as abusive. Her relationship with her family has been contentious since its end.
The conservatorship was initiated after a period of intense public scrutiny and personal struggles, including a head-shaving incident and an attack on a paparazzo's car in 2007. She was also placed under lockdown at a facility in January 2008 after refusing to hand over her son to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Spears shares sons Sean Preston and Jayden with Federline.
Spears has faced legal issues post-conservatorship. In March 2023, she pleaded guilty to reckless driving related to an incident where she was reportedly traveling at high speeds and swerving. She was sentenced to probation and ordered to undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluations. Following this, she checked into a rehabilitation facility.
