British Woman Trades Career and Home for Global Travel at 60

A British woman in her sixties has embraced a life of global adventure, quitting her job and selling her home to travel the world. Bridget Rice, 62, who previously worked as an operations manager in the hospitality industry, decided to pursue her long-held dream of extensive travel after experiencing burnout and feeling unfulfilled with her career.

Rice described her decision as a "no-brainer," spurred by a demanding job and a mortgage she anticipated would take until she was 70 to pay off. She sold her house near Bath for £420,000, which, along with savings, has funded her travels. She also credits Bitcoin with contributing to her financial freedom over recent years.

She took the plunge just before her 60th birthday. Her initial plan involved traveling with a friend, whom she met in Tunisia in 2022, after both experienced job burnout. While they began their journey together, her friend eventually decided the travel lifestyle was not for her. Rice, however, was determined to continue.

"I had a choice – leave with her, or carry on. But I wasn't prepared to throw in the towel!" she stated. Her first significant trip began in September 2023 and lasted 19 months, during which she visited 15 countries. Among her destinations are Crete, Corfu, Spain, Portugal, France, Tunisia, Switzerland, Turkey, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Koh Samui, Bali, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore.

Rice returned to the UK for five months to visit her family, including her new grandchildren. However, she soon felt the urge to travel again, leading her to Vietnam and Bali. She plans to continue her travels for as long as possible, citing the high cost of living in the UK compared to countries like Vietnam and Thailand, where she estimates she can live on approximately £200 per week.

She describes her solo adventures as transformative, noting that travel helps to shift one's perspective and encourages a deeper connection with oneself. "Your brain changes and comes out of being on autopilot... you start to think differently," Rice explained. She finds that travel temporarily removes social roles, allowing her to feel more authentically herself and discover her true desires.

Rice has also found a community among fellow travelers, many of whom are inspired by her decision to travel solo later in life. She notes that such encounters often lead to shared travel tips and a sense of camaraderie. Occasionally, she encountered surprise, particularly from men in Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Bali, who found it unusual for a woman to travel alone and assumed she had a husband accompanying her.

Currently back in the UK to visit family, Rice plans to return to Southeast Asia in the autumn, specifically to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Her long-term vision includes potentially purchasing a static caravan to use as a base when she visits the UK. She estimates she has spent about £60,000 on her travels to date, viewing the experiences as a worthwhile investment. Rice has also established an online community, "Solo Departure Lounge," to offer guidance to other women over 50 interested in solo travel.
