A British man convicted of killing a fellow tourist with a single punch outside a nightclub in Zante will be extradited to Greece to serve his 12-year sentence.

Luke Brownsdon was convicted in March 2023 for causing fatal bodily harm with serious intent in the death of Matt Jeffery, 35. Jeffery, from Yeovil, Somerset, died five days after being punched outside the Sizzle bar in Laganas on May 23, 2019. The blow caused him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

Brownsdon and a second man were arrested following the incident but were allowed to leave Greece. They were both convicted in their absence, with Brownsdon receiving a 12-year sentence and his co-defendant 10 years.

On Friday, Westminster Magistrates' Court ordered Brownsdon's extradition. He has been held in a British prison since his arrest in April 2025. Brownsdon had argued against extradition, citing concerns about overcrowding in Greek prisons, specifically the jail in Patras which was reported to be at 139% occupancy. He also claimed he was not provided with an interpreter during police interviews and was not fairly represented at his Greek trial.

CCTV footage showed that an altercation began inside the nightclub between Jeffery's group and another group. Jeffery and his friends left the club, but were followed outside by the other group. Mobile phone footage captured the moment Jeffery was struck.

Brownsdon has seven days to appeal the extradition ruling and has also lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence, which is scheduled to be heard in Greece in November.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that an investigation into Jeffery's death is ongoing and that officers are liaising with Greek authorities.
