The training regimens of several British sprinters, including an Olympic bronze medallist and a Paralympic silver medallist, were significantly disrupted when their coach, Leon Baptiste, was revealed to be imprisoned in Morocco. Baptiste, a gold-medal-winning sprinter and coach, had been training athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Baptiste mysteriously vanished two months prior to this revelation, following a trip to Morocco. It has since emerged that he was arrested in Marrakech in May and has been held at the Al-Oudaya prison. He was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor.
UK Athletics, where Baptiste served as a consultant sprinting coach, was unaware of his whereabouts or the reasons for his lack of contact. Athletes he coached received an email on Tuesday, purportedly sent on Baptiste's behalf, stating he had resigned due to unspecified ill health. This abrupt departure left athletes such as Charlie Dobson and Zac Shaw without a coach during a critical period leading up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Championships in Birmingham.
According to a source within the Moroccan Ministry of Justice, reports of Baptiste being missing were inaccurate. The source confirmed that Baptiste has been convicted and is serving a custodial sentence for a misdemeanor case. Morocco's Public Prosecution Office corroborated his sentencing and the nature of the crime.
Baptiste is currently detained at the Al-Oudaya prison in Marrakech. Reports from former inmates and human rights groups have detailed severe overcrowding, poor sanitation, and alleged prisoner abuse within the facility, although prison administration has denied these claims.
Baptiste had been in Morocco with three other former British athletes, all of whom have since returned to the UK. The athlete's family is reportedly aware of his custodial sentence. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated that they are providing support to the British national detained in Morocco and are in contact with local authorities.
