British Soldier Who Lost Leg Fighting in Ukraine Returns to Front Lines

A 27-year-old former British soldier, operating under the call sign Snow, has returned to the front lines in Ukraine following a near-fatal encounter with a Russian drone that resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee. Snow, who had been serving as a platoon commander for the Rifleman Battalion of the 3rd Assault Brigade, was injured on September 28 of the previous year while on foot near the eastern front.

He recounted the incident, stating that he was escorting two Ukrainian recruits when a fiber-optic kamikaze drone attacked. Snow pushed his men toward the forest for cover and moved to the right, where the drone struck him. "At first I stood up and I stood up on bone," he said from the Bez Obmezhen rehabilitation center in Kyiv. "Then I looked down and thought: 'Oh, it's missing.'"

Despite losing a significant amount of blood and sustaining shrapnel wounds to his other leg and back, Snow managed to signal his injury and order a casualty evacuation. After being transported to Kharkiv, he underwent over 20 surgeries. During his recovery and wait for a prosthetic leg, he admitted to contemplating suicide. However, after being fitted with a prosthetic in Kyiv, he taught himself to walk within a week and resolved to return to his unit.

"Instantly, I was like, OK, I have a leg problem. I'll get a prosthetic and I'll go back," he stated, expressing his intention to rejoin the fight from the outset.

Snow, originally from Northamptonshire, initially came to Ukraine in 2022, possessing military experience from his six years in the Royal Anglian Regiment, including a peacekeeping tour in Mali in 2017. He was drawn to Ukraine's cause after closely following the conflict since 2014, feeling he had the necessary skills and a desire to help defend the invaded nation. Before joining the Third Assault Brigade, he served with Ukraine's Defence Intelligence special forces, known as the GUR, where he became fluent in Ukrainian. He has participated in combat in Russian territories and seen heavy fighting in various Ukrainian cities and regions, earning him both the Presidential Medal and the Special Operations Medal.

His commitment has also led to him obtaining Ukrainian citizenship, a difficult process secured by receiving the Presidential Medal from Volodymyr Zelensky. He has not returned to the UK since 2022 and feels a stronger affinity with Ukraine, stating, "I've done more for this country than I did for mine." He noted a perceived freedom and acceptance in Ukraine compared to Britain, particularly regarding his extensive tattoos.

Since his injury, Snow has formed his own platoon of foreign fighters comprising various nationalities, though he jested that British fighters do not tend to stay long. While he can no longer lead assaults from the front, he now commands his platoon from an underground command center, utilizing drones to guide his men during operations. "I'm there with them," he said, describing how he monitors their movements via radio and drones. "We watch them. I talk to them by radio. Tell them how to move when it's safe to move."

Despite the limitations, Snow remains driven by a sense of duty and ambition for his soldiers. "I want them to be successful. I want them to climb higher, to become sergeants, to take the medals," he explained. "So now I need to give them my knowledge and experience."
