British Soldier Killed in Ukraine Explosion, First UK Service Member Death Since 2022 Invasion
An inquest ruled Lance Corporal George Hooley's death a tragic accident while observing Ukrainian forces test defensive capabilities.
Lance Corporal George Hooley, a British paratrooper, died from injuries sustained in an explosion in Ukraine on December 6, 2025, according to a coroner's ruling.
Hooley, 28, is the first British service member to die in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. The inquest, which included secret proceedings, found that Hooley sustained multiple injuries from an explosion away from the front lines. Senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter, stated that limited evidence was available regarding the explosion's circumstances but deemed the death not suspicious.
Before his death in a Kyiv hospital three days after the incident, Hooley had been transferred from at least one other Ukrainian hospital. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) described Hooley as an "exceptional soldier and an impressive junior leader with extensive operational experience." The MoD characterized his death as a "tragic accident" that occurred while he was "observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability."
Hooley, originally from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, joined the Parachute Regiment in June 2016. His company commander remembered him as "a born soldier" with "a deep kindness and genuine time for everyone."
The UK government has not disclosed the number of its service members in Ukraine, but has previously acknowledged that a small contingent is present to support Ukrainian armed forces and provide security for diplomatic personnel. The war in Ukraine has seen a largely stagnant front line, with Russia controlling approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. Peace negotiations have also stalled, with Kyiv and its allies accusing Russia of rejecting proposals for trilateral talks involving Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine, and alleging a desire to seize more territory.
